BOOKS: Colette Roessler, adult programming and marketing coordinator for the Bradford Area Public Library, said the recent fall book sale was “a great success” — due to the support of community.
She explained volunteers sorted books donated by local people, and many people stopped by to browse the selection.
“Thanks to the generous support of our community, we raised over $700,” she said. “All of the proceeds from the sale will be used to support our programs and services.”
If you missed the big sale, there are always shelves of used books for sale in the library’s lobby.
COASTER: If we have any adventurers out there, Darien Lake in New York state has just announced it will be building a new roller coaster.
The coaster, called Tantrum, is slated to open May 2018.
“Tantrum riders will embark on a 98-foot vertical lift at a 90-degree angle — straight up the coaster’s first hill,” the park reported.
“In a matter of seconds, upon reaching its apex, the train plummets into a 97-degree drop and pretzel inversion. Reaching speeds of 52 mph, the coaster snakes through the structure over a bunny hop, keeps riders wondering which way is up or down during an Immelmann turn, and finishes with a tilted loop.”
An Immelmann turn, we found, is a roll-off-the-top aerobatic maneuver developed by Max Immelmann for fighter pilots to use.
If anyone’s ever wondered how much a roller coaster costs, the theme park said Tantrum is “nearly a $5 million addition to the park.”
WISDOM: The Associated Press shared this thought for today: “In seeking wisdom thou art wise; in imagining that thou has attained it thou art a fool.” — Simon Ben Azzai, 2nd century (A.D.) Jewish scholar.
