RIDGWAY — What started as a nightmare on the football field during the September 15, game between the Ridgway Elkers and Sheffield Wolverines could have ended in tragedy.
However, Joey Elinski, linebacker/fullback for the Elkers, has made a full recovery from a C3-C4 spinal cord contusion and sprains to his spinal ligaments.
Joey spent one week in Altoona, including several days in the ICU at UPMC Altoona Hospital, then three days at HealthSouth Rehab Facility. Joey was able to lead his football team onto the field one week after sustaining his football career-ending injury.
The unwavering support and love Joey received was incredible, a true testament to small town greatness. The sportsmanship offered from every opposing team was awe-inspiring. The instant Joey hit the field, he became every parents’ child, every coaches’ player and every football player’s teammate.
Joey is now focusing on his passion for hunting, both archery and rifle. He is enjoying pheasant hunting with his dog, Fritz and cheering on the Elkers.
The catchphrase, “JoeyStrong”, truly does describe this 18 year-old young man. It is a good strategy to follow. Get Strong. Be Strong. Stay Strong.
