WONDERFUL PEOPLE: Kerri Spangler of Kane shared a story about pleasant encounter she had over the weekend with a veteran.
She writes, “Just a note to tell people that there are still wonderful people in the world.
“My daughter and I were at Applebee’s Saturday, November 4. We met a gentleman and his lady friend while waiting for a table. He is a Vietnam Veteran.
“He struck up a conversation with my grandchildren and was very nice. As we were finishing up our dinner, the waitress came over and said our check was paid for.
“We had no idea who would do this. We only got his first name, Bob. His friend said he picked up the check.
“We just wanted to let Bob and his friend how thoughtful and generous he is. Also wanted to thank him for his service and hope he has a wonderful Veteran’s Day. Thanks so much!!”
We really appreciate that Kerri passed along her story. Some days it’s easy to feel like people are jerks, and it’s great to have a reminder sometimes that there are still wonderful people in the world.
BRAM STOKER:Author Bram Stoker turns 170 today, or he would if he were still alive.
He’s best known for his Gothic novel “Dracula,” which was published 120 years ago in May 1897.
Some sources also list today as the birthday of Vlad the Impaler. He was born in 1431, but not everyone seems to agree on the date. There is a theory — though not a universally believed one — that the Romanian prince was an inspiration for the character of Count Dracula in Stoker’s novel.
