VETERANS: In case you were wondering, we are still compiling stories and photos of servicemen and women for Saluting Our Veterans, a special insert to appear in the Nov. 11 edition of The Era.
In recognition of Veterans Day, family members are invited to submit print-quality photos accompanied with as much information as is known about a veteran’s service — either in decades past or today.
Information and attached photos may be sent via email to bradfordera@yahoo.com, or the materials may be presented at the Era newsroom, where photos can be digitized. Materials may be presented from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Era newsroom.
The deadline for submission is Thursday, Nov. 2.
A reminder: Photocopies of images cannot be reproduced for our printing purposes — we need an original image, which will be scanned right away and returned to the owner.
Please, do not send materials you would want back via the U.S. Postal Service.
EXPERIMENT: It was 265 years ago that information on Benjamin Franklin’s ideas about electricity were published — in particular his famous kite experiment.
According to the National Archives, an article called “The Kite Experiment” was printed Oct. 19, 1752, in The Pennsylvania Gazette.
The National Archives related, “At some time during 1751 or 1752 Franklin got the idea that he could send his conductor high enough by means of a kite, and that if it were flown during a thunder shower, the wet string might serve to bring the electrical charge down within reach.”
It’s unclear when he actually carried out the experiment, but it’s been suggested that it was in June 1752.
The article was “a brief statement about the kite experiment with instructions for repeating it.”
