DUBOIS — The Bradford High boys and girls golf teams both competed at the sub-regional tournament at Treasure Lake on Thursday.
Villa Maria from District 10 posted a team score of 272 to win the girls Class AAA sub-regional.
The Lady Owls took second with a 290 and State College finished third with a 311.
Ali Kloecker from Villa Maria, shot the low round of the tourney with an 86.
Villa Maria’s first place finish qualifies the team for the state tournament in York on Oct. 25.
The Lady Owls were led by Elyse Godding’s 91, followed by Kate Huber’s 96 and Abby Zickefoose’s 103.
“Conditions were deplorable because of all the rain that DuBois has gotten,” said Bradford coach Judy Abbey. “It was cold and windy.
“Elyse played well considering the conditions, but had one bad hole and then birdied three in row. She didn’t give up. Kate had a tough day and this was Abby’s last chance to play for Bradford. We will miss her next year,” Coach Abbey stated.
The season is not over yet for Godding. She will be playing in the Wes individual state qualifier at Tom’s Run in Blairsville on Monday. That tournament will have golfers from the Western Region which is comprised of districts 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The top six finishers advance to the state tournament in York on Oct. 23-24.
On the boys side, Erie Prep’s Pat Kelly carded a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Ramblers to a first place finish.
Prep finished with a four-man team total of 304, followed by Altoona with 321 and Bradford with a 345.
The win advances Prep to the state team championship later this month in York.
“Prep is a team to beat,” said Bradford coach Travis Faulkner. “It was misty and chilly today and their score was very impressive.”
Leading Bradford in Thursday’s sub-regional was Brice Whelan with a 79, followed by Joey Frigo with an 85, Thomas Anderson with 88 and Joe Gorse with 93. (Playing as the Owls’ fifth man was Hunter Fox with a 102)
“For Brice to shoot a 79 with three birdies was a great round,” Faulkner pointed out. “That puts him in form for Monday’s Western Regional individual tournament in Blairsville at Toms Run.
“Joey Frigo had two birdies in shooting his 85. He really pulled it together for his final match of the year. He had been struggling a little and I was glad to see him shoot a low round.
“Thomas (Anderson) and Joe (Gorse) fought through some tough conditions and made some good putts to save their rounds,” Faulkner stated.
“I’m really proud of the way the guys played this year. Today was our low team score of year,” the Owls coach added.
