COUDERSPORT — Potter County is applying to the Commemorative Partner Program, a national initiative launched to thank and honor Vietnam veterans.
The Potter County Veterans Service Committee will submit an application to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to join the Congressional program, looking to build on previous efforts to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers from Potter County involved in previous conflicts.
Nine young men from Potter County lost their lives in service to their country during the Vietnam War. All of the men have been memorialized through official bridge dedications, which require an act of the state legislature to finalize. Several years ago, a dinner was held to commemorate Korean War veterans, and Commissioner Paul Heimel, a member of the county’s veterans’ service committee, stated that a similar event will be planned for Vietnam veterans, with more details to be released as planning gets underway. Heimel announced the new effort during Thursday’s commissioners’ meeting.
A presentation was made by Steve Weeks of the Experience Works’ Senior Corps RSVP program. Experience Works is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping older adults age with dignity and purpose through job training, volunteerism, and employment.
RSVP, which stands for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, engages people 55 and older in a diverse range of volunteer activities that address important community needs. The program has been changed slightly, according to Weeks, to include people over age 55 who are not yet retired.
Weeks stated that gaps volunteers could fill have been identified in areas including food banks, Meals-on-Wheels, after-school programs, veterans, transportation, and seniors. Commissioner Susan Kefover stressed transportation as one of the biggest gaps needing filled.
Kefover also reported that funding for façade repair is available to business and property owners. A program through the Pennsylvania Wilds and Route 6 organizations did not receive as many applications as could be funded, and additional properties are encouraged to apply. Funds are available also through the downtown committee. Businesses along Route 6 and in the county’s heritage communities can participate. The next meeting of the Potter County Commissioners will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 26 at the Gunzburger Building in Coudersport.
