SMETHPORT — The Penn State Extension is offering “dining with diabetes” classes in Smethport and in Bradford.
“Dining with diabetes” is a nationally accredited program for adults with or at risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Join us for a series of 5 weekly classes that focus on knowing and reaching self-care goals, planning healthy meals, food tastings, discussing sweeteners and fats, label reading and the importance of physical activity in delaying or preventing diabetes complications.
Classes are offered weekly for five weeks, with a three month follow-up. An A1C test, a measure of blood glucose levels ($35 value), and a blood pressure reading will be taken at the first and follow-up classes. Participants are also given incentives such as an exercise DVD, plate method placemat, and a Dining with Diabetes Cookbook.
Smethport classes begin Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the McKean Co 911 Center and will continue on the 24th, 31st, Nov. 7th and 14th.
Bradford classes begin Oct. 19 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA and will continue on the 26th, Nov. 2nd, 9th, and 16th.
Cost for the entire program will be $5 per individual or $10 with an additional guest.
Preregistration is required and can be made by calling Penn State Extension at 814-274-8540 or emailing srg22@psu.edu. Self-registration can be completed online at extension.psu.edu/diabetes. Registration deadline is Friday.
