PORT ALLEGANY — Port Allegany’s Trey Stiles ran for three touchdowns and the Gators snapped a 17-game losing streak with a 20-7 victory over Sheffield in their AML game Friday night.
Stiles finished the game with 113 yards on 18 carries and the Gators put together 232 yards of total offense. Stiles averaged 6.3 yards per carry.
In a game between two teams looking for their first win, the defenses ruled the first quarter keeping both offenses from reaching their opponent’s end zone.
Sheffield ended the scoreless tie when Joshua Aguido broke free for a 36-yard touchdown with 3:19 left in the half. Matt Dunham kicked the PAT to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead.
Port Allegany answered the challenge with Stiles reaching paydirt from one yard out with just 26 seconds left in the half. The PAT was no good and the teams left the field for the break with Sheffield up 7-6.
Stiles took over in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns, finding an opening for a 53 yard burst as play got under way in the second half and then bulling in from two yards out midway through the period. Devon Smoker scored the two-point conversion after the first TD.
The Gators had stretched their advantage to 20-7 and put the game in the hands of their defense, which gave up 100 yards to Aguido, but only a total of 138 yards to the Wolverines for the night.
Gang tackling was a key defensively for Port with Issac Smoker and Jacob Kallenborn each credited with 3.5 tackles, and Eli Petruzzi, Stiles, Devon Smoker and Josh Reese getting credit for three each, and Tyler Bliss with 2.5.
Port Allegany returns to action next Saturday, hosting Cameron County in the Gators’ homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for an afternoon start.
