HUMMINGBIRDS: To answer Dan’s question from Thursday’s column, he is not the only one who is still seeing hummingbirds late in the year.
Jody Jaros of Port Allegany called Thursday to say, “We just saw one this morning at are feeder, also. We’ve had them here for several days.”
We guess the birds aren’t ready for winter to be on its way, either.
DRACONIDS: This weekend should be a good time to view the Draconid meteor shower — if the weather cooperates.
This year, the most EarthSky.org expects that the most meteors will be visible on the evenings of Oct. 7 or 8.
“Start watching first thing at nightfall,” the organization recommends. This is unlike most meteor showers, which are most visible in the early morning hours.
“October’s Draconid meteor shower — sometimes called the Giacobinids — radiates from the fiery mouth of the northern constellation Draco the Dragon,” EarthSky describes.
What an image.

We in the Bradford area will only get to watch if the clouds part long enough.
The National Weather Service in State College is calling for mostly cloudy skies both tonight and Sunday night with a 60-percent chance of rain both nights.
Sigh.
JAZZ SINGER: It’s been 90 years since “talkies” debuted in movie theaters.
The Associated Press reports, “On Oct. 6, 1927, the era of talking pictures arrived with the opening of ‘The Jazz Singer’ starring Al Jolson, a feature containing both silent and sound-synchronized sequences.”
