WARREN — Two elderly women were killed in a crash Thursday morning on U.S. Route 6 in Pittsfield Township, Warren County, when their car collided with an Advanced Disposal garbage truck.
Warren-based state police did not release the names of the women killed, saying only that the driver was a 71-year-old woman from Warren, and the front-seat passenger was an 80-year-old woman of Warren. A 52-year-old woman rear passenger in the 2009 Subaru Forester was injured, and flown to UPMC Hamot in Erie, where she was listed as in critical condition.
Police said the crash occurred at 10:23 a.m. at the intersection of Routes 6 and 27. The car was traveling west on Old Pittsfield Road, stopped at the stop sign with Route 6 and proceeded to cross over Route 27 to Route 6 west. As the car entered Route 6, it failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by the garbage truck, which was traveling east on Route 6, police stated.
Coroner Jeremiah Borden pronounced both women dead at the scene.
The driver of the garbage truck, a 61-year-old man from Franklin, was not injured.
Route 6 east and west were shut down for approximately three hours.
Assisting on the scene were Garland Volunteer Fire Department, Youngsville Volunteer Fire Department, Emergy Care Ambulance and Life Flight.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Police said no charges will be filed as a result of the accident.
Police were withholding identities of those involved in the crash pending notification of next of kin.
