A man who formerly served as a basketball coach and pastor in Kane is currently facing allegations that he stole money from Beaver County Church.
Rodney E. Smith was a pastor in Kane until 2001. He was most recently serving as pastor at the Chippewa United Methodist Church in Beaver Falls, Beaver County, where he was accused of taking more than $30,000.
Smith, 63, of Mars, was charged Aug. 30 with one count of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, a second-degree felony, the online court docket states.
Smith has an ARD court date scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 6. ARD — or the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition Program — is a program in Pennsylvania in which defendants are placed on supervision similar to probation, and if they complete all the requirements of the program, the defendant can have the charges dismissed.
Also, a trial date is on the court schedule for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 8.
Pittsburgh-based WPXI news reported that Smith is accused of purchasing more than $30,000 in gift cards using church money to be given to people in need, then using them.
In mid-September, Smith’s attorney, Casey White of Pittsburgh, told WPXI that Smith paid restitution of $31,000 in full shortly after the charges were filed.
Smith is free on $50,000 unsecured bail.
Smith led the Kane Wolves high school basketball team to win the District 9 title and to play in the PIAA playoffs multiple years as coach.
