SMETHPORT — Despite seeing limited field time, Port Allegany’s Payton Caden was still able to set a school record in Tuesday’s Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League game at Smethport.
Caden scored six goals, tying Scotty Brooken’s school single-game record from 2012, as the Gators improved their record to 11-2 (7-1 UAVSL North) with a 10-0 win at Smethport. Now at 26 tallies on the year, Caden scored four goals in the first half and then another two within four minutes of each other in the second half.
“Payton did an amazing job with being efficient with his minutes,” Port Allegany head coach Aaron Clark said. “He had seven shots and had six goals. I can’t ask for much more in the short period of time he was on the field.”
Shawn McNeil added two goals for the Gators, while David Talkington and Simon Burleson each added a tally.
Tyler Lashway had four assists for Port Allegany, while Josh Mealy and Seth Bowers combined for a save in goal. Smethport’s Jacob Connor had 14 saves for the Hubbers (1-8).
Smethport hosts Elk Catholic on Thursday, while Port Allegany travels to St. Marys to play the Dutch in an important league game. If the Gators win, they’ll have a chance to tie St. Marys and repeat as league champions. A win by the Dutch would give St. Marys a season sweep of the Gators and all but lock up the league title.
Also, Tuesday’s game is likely the last for the Route 6 rivals which spent the better part of the last decade atop the UAVSL North division. It was recently announced at the District 9 committee meeting the two schools plan to enter a cooperative agreement, with Smethport’s players joining the Port Allegany program.
The co-op has been agreed upon at the school board and District 9 level.
