KANE — Noah Costa not only led Smethport to its first win of the season, he did so in school-record fashion.
Just three days after being stretchered out of Smethport’s football game on Friday night, Costa – who also plays wide receiver – scored all five goals on Monday as the Hubbers (1-7, 1-6 UAVSL North) topped Kane, 5-2, in boys Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League action. Costa’s five markers tied the all-time single game scoring mark of Dario Caminite, set in 2011.
“He missed Saturday’s soccer game vs. St. Marys as a precautionary measure, but returned today to lead the way,” Hubbers head coach Jesse Cheatle said. “Every goal was scored on a counter attack and Costa did a great job of attacking the goalie.”
Goalkeeper Brandon Peterson “had a solide game,” according to Cheatle, recording 19 saves. Caleb Lutz chipped in with two assists, while Peterson, Gabe Rowley-Thompson and Kylar Carpenter each had one assist.
Cheatle also pointed out the work of freshman defender Matt Nolte who “played a great game defensively and is picking it up quickly as a first year starter.”
Kane’s Aiden Zampogna opened the scoring in the first half, but two Costa goals gave the Hubbers a 2-1 lead at the break. Costa’s third goal expanded the lead before Kane’s Patrick Detsch found the back of the net to bring the scoreline to 3-2, but two more Costa goals put the game away.
The Wolves’ (1-7 UAVSL North) Brennan Schultz had eight saves in net.
Smethport heads to Coudersport on Thursday while Kane travels to Brockway.
