The Northern Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service is proposing to conduct a small wood demonstration/ research project on the Kane experimental forest in Jones Township, Elk County.
This would involve removing low-shade — all trees less than 11 inches in diameter at breast height — on 30 to 50 acres of stand 915009 within the experimental forest. All trees between 4 and 11 inches in diameter would be felled, skidded, chipped and removed for appropriate markets.
All trees less than 4 inches at breast height would be felled and left on site. After the low-shade treatment, reforestation treatments including herbicide application, fencing and fertilization would be completed alone or in combination on 5 acre blocks within the stand to test the feasibility of using on-site chipping in combination with other reforestation treatments as an option to regenerate forest stands while using small woody material. The purpose of the demonstration/ research project is to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of marketing “beech brush” and other small woody material as part of the regeneration process.
