“In a time where cities are taking down historical monuments, the Bradford Area Lions are erecting one,” said Pete Peckyno, project chairman of the Bradford Area Lions Club.
On Oct. 29, the Lions will be installing a monument in honor of all the Lions who have served the community, country and international community.
The massive, granite monument stands at six feet high and weighs approximately 2,600 pounds. It will be located in the front yard of the Bradford Community Club.
While describing the monument, Peckyno said it will have a two-headed lion at the top looking in opposite directions.
“The lion looks to both the past and present,” Peckyno said. “And underneath is the 100-year-old emblem of a lion with a bone in its teeth.”
The installation will include lights that will encircle the memorial, allowing it to be illuminated and viewed at night.
“Another interesting fact is the granite we used,” Peckyno said. “It’s the exact same granite used on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.”
Corporate sponsors of the Bradford Area Lions will have their businesses etched into the granite in honor of their donation.
The installation of the monument will also be accompanied by a recognition banquet dedicated to the sponsors that will be held at the Bradford Area Lions Community Center after the unveiling of the monument.
“Our sponsors will be treated to a catered dinner as another thank you for everything that they’ve done,” Peckyno said.
