The criminal justice system can be daunting for those unfamiliar with the system.
On Monday, McKean County District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer held a seminar at the Bradford Area Public Library to discuss the criminal justice process, and answer questions that members of the public might have.
In the seminar, which was free and open to the public, Shaffer gave a thorough walkthrough of what happens between arrests and resolutions as well as a detailed explanation about determining a sentence.
She described the process from the time of arrest through arraignment, preliminary hearings, county court appearances, pleas or criminal trials, and sentencing.
“In the criminal justice process, we have to follow a strict sentencing guideline,” Shaffer said. “It’s important for people to at the very least understand the basics that are involved in the process.”
Shaffer clarified many misconceptions that citizens may have about the criminal justice process, making sure to use relatable language and terminology.
Some in attendance diligently wrote notes while Shaffer spoke. At the end of the seminar, Shaffer opened the floor to questions, of which there were many. Most questions seemed to relate to sentences and how a sentence is decided.
