KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s soccer team erupted for four goals and earned its second straight shutout win, defeating Keuka, 4-0, Sunday afternoon.
“We came out today with momentum from yesterday’s win,” head coach Melissa Lincoln said. “I was impressed with both the defensive effort to hold the shutout and the offensive attack we built today.”
Just four minutes into the game, the Panthers earned a corner kick attempt and made the most of it.
Delaney Houtz found Meghan Stuck, who put the ball past the Keuka keeper, giving Pitt-Bradford the early 1-0 lead.
Shortly before halftime, Kaitlyn Donnelly delivered a pass in the air to Grace Dadzaa, who knocked in a header to double the Panthers’ lead.
Just after the start of the second half, Keuka was whistled for a foul, setting up a Panthers corner kick.
Abby Celesky took the kick for Pitt-Bradford, and put it in the back of the net to give UPB a 3-0 lead at the 47-minute mark.
Pitt-Bradford scored its final goal of the game with three minutes left in regulation as Meghan Thomas found Courtney Shade on a through ball, and Shade dribbled past the keeper to finish.
The Panthers fired 16 shots, their most of the season.
Dadzaa, Thomas and Kaitlyn Williams led the way with three, and Celesky, Stuck and Shade had two apiece. Houtz added one of her own.
Sarah Dailey made eight saves in goal and kept Keuka out of the net to record her second-straight shutout.
The last Panthers women’s soccer 4-0 win came at Franciscan on Sept. 26, 2015.
Today’s game wrapped up five straight road games to open up Pitt-Bradford’s 2017 season.On Saturday, the Panthers blanked Alfred, 1-0, behind a goal from Shade.
The Bradford High graduate took a pass from Williams and headed the ball by the Alfred goalkeeper at the 12:04 mark for the game’s lone score.
Pitt-Bradford fired 14 total shots in the game and forced the Alfred keeper to make seven saves.
The Panthers will be home on Wednesday as Houghton comes to town for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
UPB men’s soccer fall to Wooster
Despite a late-game offensive push from The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men’s soccer team, the Panthers fell to Wooster, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Kessel Athletics Complex.
“We had our chances in the second half, but just couldn’t get one in,” Head Coach Nate Whitehurst said. “I liked how well we were combining down the line and creating chances out wide. But we just could not get one through.”
Wooster scored its lone goal of the first half in the opening minutes of the game on its first shot attempt.
The Panther defense held up during the first period, defending five corner kick chances.
Derrick Brock saw 12 shots in the first half and made four saves for Pitt-Bradford.
While the Panthers recorded two shots on goal in the second half, they had consistent pressure in the upper third for much of the half.
However, the Panthers could not find the back of the net, despite setting themselves up for solid chances in their corner kick attempts.
The Pitt-Bradford defense held Wooster to just three shots on goal in the second half, but Wooster made the most of their final shot of the game, doubling its lead in the final minute of the game off a corner kick.
Steven McFetridge, Jean Paul Diaz and Ethan Acaster recorded shots for the Panthers.
Brock finished with six saves.
The Panthers will stay home as their next action will take place on Wednesday against Alfred State at 3 p.m.
Panthers volleyball falls in final day of action
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s volleyball team fell in both of its final games in the Rochester Tournament held at the University of Rochester, losing in straight sets to Hamilton in the morning’s action and then 3-1 in the final game of the tournament vs. SUNY Poly.
The Panthers went into the morning coming off a pair of thrilling wins in the first day of the tournament.
“We were flat today compared to yesterday, and we played some pretty tough teams,” Head Coach Tom Roof said. “We struggled defensively, so it was tough to get any offense going. It was another big learning experience for this young team.”
In the morning’s game, the Panthers scored 18 points in the first set, the most they’d get out of the three sets.
Emily Cleveland knocked a team-best seven kills while Riley Anderson had six. Laura Hildebrand had 15 digs and Payton Orzech had 10 assists. Cleveland and Katie Treat each assisted three blocks.
In game two, the Panthers grabbed the first set, 25-18, but then dropped the next two.
Set four saw a tough battle on both sides. Down 15-5, the Panthers stormed back to bring the score to 18-17 in favor of SUNY Poly.
Pitt-Bradford hung around and eventually took a 21-20 lead. But SUNY Poly outscored the Panthers, 5-1, the rest of the way to secure the victory.
In the contest, Cleveland led the game with 19 kills on 31 attempts. Erin Fagan added eight of her own. Orzech had 21 assists and 18 digs, and Hildebrand dug 13.
For her performance during the four games, Cleveland was named to the All-Tournament Team.
On Monday, the Panthers will host a JV game as Penn State-Dubois comes to the KOA Arena. The next official action will be on Wednesday as the team heads to Geneseo.
