I’m stepping out of the box this week for just a moment, so bear with me!
I enjoy college football, at times more so than the NFL, but last weekend I about had my fill of the term “true freshman.”
If it was used once, it was used 50 times during the course of the weekend’s games that I watched. It seemed like nearly everyone on the field was a “true freshman.”
I’m sure some of them probably were, but when the camera panned in for a close up shot, I swear they looked more like 30-year-old true freshmen.
There, now I feel better.
GOING CLARKIE — Over the years that the late Greg Clark (you have not been forgotten big guy) wrote his weekly columns, whether it was his college football picks or just his off-the-wall thoughts on about anything, he would occasionally throw in a zinger.
One day he just decided he liked “cricket,” that game they play in Great Britain, I believe with more of a paddle than a round bat. He would come up with team names and both Joe Vinelli and I just scratched our heads not knowing if they were real or he was just pushing our buttons.
I still don’t know for sure!
However, now it’s my turn.
I recently started watching the weekly CBR broadcasts. For you non-cowpokes out there it stands for Championship Bull Riding. I know, it sounds crazy, but it is kind of interesting.
My wife, Molly, has always followed it. I on the other hand, was a blood-and-guts action movie guy where there was a lot of shooting, explosions and mangled bodies. She felt there was too much violence in those movies.
But, wait just a minute. If you want to talk about violence, what about a 1,000-pound bull tossing some 185-pound cowboy about eight feet in the air and then watching him crash to the ground and barely able to get out of the ring.
Well, the cowboys are still riding and the bulls are still tossing them around like rag dolls, but I think I’ve come addicted, sort of like Clarkie and cricket. I even know the guys’ names – Sage Kimzey, Eli Vasbinder and Bourdeau Campbell – to name a few.
By the way, Kimzey won the overall championship over Vasbinder by just six points, the closest race ever.
Enough of that. Let’s move on. I promise to talk more about football next week.
MY RECORD — As promised, I have figured out my record after the first two weeks of the football season. On Week “0,” yes Week Zero, according to the PIAA, only the Pennsylvania schools played. There were only seven games and I went 6-1. Usually dependable Karns City lost, keeping me from a perfect night. Last weekend, or, Week 1, (or two depending on whether or not you can count) I was 10-3. That puts me at 16-4 on the young season.
Now on to this weekend’s games.
TONIGHT’S GAMES
Bradford at Cameron County
The Red Raiders are no match for the Owls this season who are looking at a 3-0 start. Bradford just has to remember to take its foot off the pedal when the point spread gets out of hand. Remember, the AML was kind two years ago and Bradford may need its help again. BRADFORD BY 21
Kane at Coudersport
This could be a better game than everyone thinks. The Falcons had Bradford back on its heels in the second quarter last week, although the Owls took control in the second half on both sides of the ball. The Wolves are still loaded and that will be a problem for Coudy. KANE BY 18
Elk Catholic at Otto-Eldred
The Terrors have been able to score some points this season, but they’ll need to find the end zone a few more times tonight. ECCH BY 16
Sheffield at Curwensville
Don’t look for the Golden Tide to show the Wolverines any mercy. CURWENSVILLE BY 24
St. Marys at Clarion-Limestone
I went with the Dutch last week and they didn’t come through for me. CLARION-LIMESTONE BY 8
Port Allegany at Brockway
Tthe Gators are struggling to score enough points to make the game competitive. Brockway isn’t a team that gives them up easily. BROCKWAY BY 18
TONIGHT’S OTHER GAMES
Union/A-C Valley at Keystone, KEYSTONE BY 7
Redbank Valley at Karns City, REDBANK BY 18
Clarion at Brookville, BROOKVILLE BY 6
Punxsutawney at Moniteau, MONITEAU BY 12
