VICTORY: “In the summer of 1945, what most Americans on duty in the Pacific dreaded was the upcoming invasion of Japan. The atomic explosions at Hiroshima and Nagasaki canceled that operation when the Japanese quickly surrendered.”
That surrender marks Victory over Japan Day — or V-J Day, according to the Library of Congress.
The Japanese announced the surrender in August and made it official in writing on Sept. 2, 1945.
Clayton Vecellio of Lewis Run dropped a line reminding us to make note of the historical day.
“Let’s not forget this day,” he writes.
ROCKS: People are really excited about the Kindness Rock Project.
Sarah Lanphere of Emporium called to let us know the project has been underway there for awhile, and her family has been involved for the past month or so.
Sarah explained that her daughter, Christine Lucas, and Christine’s children have been collecting rocks to put all over Emporium.
“They would collect them and paint pictures on them or a blessing,” she noted.
Sarah thinks it’s great so many communities are joining in.
“It gets the families involved,” she said. “You have people going out who would really get out for a walk, going out to look for friendship rocks. It gets people to move around.”
The project has made its way to Kane, too.
One reader sent up this photo a few days ago after reading about it in the paper.
“This rock was found in the Rite Aid parking lot in Kane today. Very sweet!”
