The Bradford Old-Timers league wrapped up its 2017 season Sunday afternoon at Pitt-Bradford’s Kessel Athletic Complex Softball field with BV Mobile Shredding finishing off its 11-1 campaign.
The team finished with a doubleheader sweep of Stroeman’s (2-12) to secure first place in the standings.
In game one, BV jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 18-2 win.
Matt Ridenour led the Shredders at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a triple and five RBIs. Travis Faulkner went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Brad Bucholtz added a triple and a home run and knocked in two runs. Dave Confer doubled and collected three RBIs.
For Stroeman’s, Duke Tyger went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jim Taylor doubled.
Game two was much closer, with BV pulling away late to win, 7-2.
Dan Shonts led BV in game two, going 2-for-4 and knocking in three runs. Faulkner added a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and Confer collected two hits.
For Stroeman’s, Jamie Gray tripled and drove in a run and Todd Barrett had an RBI single.
The best game of the day was the first game of the double dip between McHones and Sherman’s. Down 7-1 after four, McHones rallied back to tie it at 10 in the seventh.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Duke Haven ripped a triple to center but was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch into an inside-the-park home run to keep it tied at 10. The next batter, Dustin Craig, also tripled. Trying to create a force at any base, McHones intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases, while Brad Craig then hit a bloop single just over the outstretched glove of McHones shortstop Steve Woodel and in front of left centerfielder Rich Quiggle to knock in the game-winning run.
Sherman’s (7-5) was led by Bob Jimmerson (4-for-4, triple). Along with his triple, Haven finished the game going 3-for-4. Justin Wesmiller added a double and Brian Wesmiller added a triple.
Ed Yale (2-for-4, triple, three RBIs), Brad Rochna (4-for-4, two doubles) and Steve Woodel (two hits, three RBIs) led McHones (4-8).
Game two ended up being a blowout with Sherman’s posting the only shutout of the year, stopping McHones, 11-0.
Sherman’s was led by Justin Wesmiller and Jimmerson (both 3-for-4), while the latter added a triple. Haven was perfect (4-for-4) at the plate and Ron Kennedy added two singles.
Woodel, Todd Breeding and Matt Maholic (2-for-3 each) led McHones at the dish.
In the home run derby, each contestant was given 12 swings with Mark Davis taking the title with seven dingers. Rochna was second with six.
In the all-star game, each team had five players voted to the teams. The final score was 10-7 with players from McHones and Sherman’s adding the winning players
Doug Ekas (3-for-3, triple, three runs) of the McHones/Sherman’s team was named the game’s MVP, while Todd Breeding added a double for the winners.
For the BV/Stroeman’s team, Matt Ridenour was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
All players and their families were treated to hotdogs and hamburgers during the day with money left over from the team’s entry fees.
