TAKE A DIP: School is back in session, and that often means the end of swimming. Not so throughout Pennsylvania state parks.
Pools and beaches will remain open, even after Labor Day weekend, state officials announced.
“Fourteen parks have pools. While most of them are open for the Labor Day weekend, many are offering reduced hours because lifeguards, who are most often high school and college students, have returned to school,” state officials said.
Meanwhile, 54 state parks have designated swimming beaches, including Lyman Run State Park and Ole Bull State Park in Potter County.
“Many swimming beaches at state park lakes are open into the school year because they operate under the ‘open swim’ policy, meaning you swim at your own risk and schedules are not dependent on lifeguard availability,” officials said in a statement. “This allows visitors to enjoy a longer swimming season.”
Pools are located at Bendigo State Park in Elk County and Sizerville State Park in Cameron County.
To check on the hours of operation, call the state park or see http://www.dcnr.pa.gov.
ELK: A program about antlers is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette.
“Everyone is thrilled when they see huge bull elk with their impressive antlers,” officials said. “During this popular educational program learn many amazing facts about antlers. Learn about the various species in North America that sport antlers and the differences between them. Afterwards try your hand at antler scoring with our KECA (Keystone Elk Country Alliance) education staff.”
The following day starting at 3 p.m. at the visitor center, there’ll be story time. People will be able to listen to an educational story and then take part in an activity.
“Make plans to spend the day in Elk Country,” officials said in a Facebook post. “Viewing is best in the early morning hours just after daylight and in the evening hours before dark. Spend the rest of your day walking trails, browsing shops, grabbing a bite to eat, and just enjoy your time here.”
