BACK TO SCHOOL: Slowly but surely, students from all over the area –– if not already –– are making their way back to school. Some area high schools began classes last week, while Bradford High officially started its school year on Tuesday. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, as well as schools in Pennsylvania’s State System, began fall semester courses on Monday.
As many may have noticed on Tuesday, there were more than a few parents waiting on sidewalks around the Bradford area for their children to get off the school bus after the first day.
It got us thinking in the newsroom –– how well do we remember our first day of school, whether that was in kindergarten or college.
Amanda Caldwell recalls her first class as a college student at Pitt-Bradford. “It was a freshman seminar course taught by Dr. BioDun Ogundayo exploring imagination in the Harry Potter books. In that first class Ogundayo pushed me to grow as a thinker and writer. The novels by J.K. Rowling that were significant to me in my youth became a great introduction to my experience at Pitt-Bradford with many amazing professors.”
Pete Sirianni: I remember driving with my dad, brother and sister through town before my first day of kindergarten at Chestnut Street Elementary in Kane. On the way home, I believe my bus had some troubles and was late dropping me off.
Ruth Bogdan: I have this vague memory of being in my kindergarten classroom at Rixford Elementary School — man, I miss that school — and there were so many people standing around. I remember not really understanding what was going on. I feel like it must have been my first day of school, but I’m honestly not sure. Rixford was the smallest school I ever attended, which was really great at the time.
Alex Davis: I recall being anxious, nervous and excited my first few days at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. I went from having a class of around 70 classmates to around 250 or so. It’s hard to believe that was a decade ago. Man, time flies.
