AGE JUST A NUMBER: A reader shared a timely tidbit about the power a determined youth has to change the face of history.
The reader referred to the recent announcement of the finding of the USS Indianapolis — “a naval ship which was sunk by torpedoes during World War II.” Our reader explained the attack was “unknown for four days until its survivors were spotted by air surveillance.”
The U.S. Navy announced Saturday that the ship was located on the floor of the North Pacific Ocean by the crew of Research Vessel Petrel.
“The book ‘In Harm’s Way’ by Doug Stanton gives an account of the ship’s mission/sinking.
“However, the book ‘Left for Dead’ by Pete Nelson tells the story of how a 14-year-old boy worked to clear the ship’s captain and crew’s name; that they were not at fault, but the sinking was a tragic circumstance of war.
“With school about to resume, it should be noted that age is not a factor when one’s intentions are honorable and good.”
In fact, today is the first day of classes in Bradford Area School District. Watch out for all the kiddos waiting for the bus today!
ROCKS: Remember the kindness rock that Bonnie Himes found by the Foster Brook Creamery?
We found out how it got there.
Dianna DeCasper of Lewis Run called to tell us, “My grandsons are the two boys who hid the rock.”
She said the boys — Matt and Lucas DeCasper — found the rock on Main Street near The Era and Northwest Bank. Then, “we went to the Creamery and they re-hid it,” she explained.
Dianna and her grandsons are happy about their involvement in the rock project.
“We hid about 30 of them throughout the town, and we’ve been finding them and re-hiding them,” she said. “We’ve enjoyed it very much.”
