SMETHPORT (EC) — Orders are now being taken for the second and final round of Smethport Hometown Hero Banners honoring any military veterans.

“The deadline for this order is noon, September 11,” said Sherry Anderson, project coordinator. “No orders will be accepted after this date.”

Speaking about the first order of banners, which are displayed throughout the borough, Anderson said there were many people who were either unaware of the project or thought they were only for deceased veterans.

“We need 15 to 20 people interested in purchasing a banner for the price of $130.”

The wording “Hometown Heroes” will appear at the top of the weatherproof banners, which measure 18 inches by 36 inches and will be displayed on utility poles around town.

Any photo of the veteran can be submitted; the veteran need not be in uniform. Additional required information includes branch of service, rank, years of service, area of conflict and sponsors, such as spouse, children or family.

If sponsors are unable to provide Anderson personally with the fee and information about the veteran, orders will be accepted at the VFW Post #2497 on East Water Street in Smethport. Checks should be made payable to “VFW Post #2497.”
