WARREN — Recreation areas at the Kinzua Dam have been reopened, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District announced Tuesday.
This includes the visitors’ parking lot, restrooms, picnic areas and the Kinzua Dam visitors center at the Allegheny Reservoir.
“The Army Corps closed the areas after law enforcement officials informed the agency of an unspecified threat involving Kinzua Dam,” officials explained on social media.
The Corps did not provide further details on the threat.
When officials first announced the temporary closing of the recreation areas due to “an ongoing law enforcement issue,” the nonspecific nature of the explanation left people on social media to speculate.
In response to suggestions that the facilities were closed due to financial issues, the Army Corps stated there are funds to operate the recreation areas. Officials further noted that there were no structural issues with the dam.
The agency stated on Tuesday, “The Army Corps takes its commitment to protect public health and safety seriously and will implement appropriate measures when aware of increased risk. This includes actions that involve information security and physical security.”
The Army Corps stated its appreciation for people who reported suspicious activity to staff or 911 and said people can also report suspicious activity to the See Something, Say Something Corps Watch Hotline at 1-800-413-7970.
