717/223: Starting Saturday, people living in south central Pennsylvania will start seeing a new area code creeping through their traditionally 717 territory.

That’s when an additional area code of 223 will be added, according to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC).

The 16-county 717 area code region includes the cities of Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster and York.

So, if you’re living in or visiting the 717 region, make sure you dial 10 numbers.

A trip that is close to home — such as a boat ride on the Allegheny Reservoir — would make for a relatively simple and fun family getaway. To make sure no family member is left behind, Allstate shared a few tips recently to keep pets safe during a boat ride.

To start, Allstate recommends letting pets get familiar with the boat before going in the water and even turning on the engine so they get used to the noise. Also, “Provide them with their own small space that is safe and out of the way.”

Buy a pet life jacket — even for pets that are good swimmers. Have them try out their new flotation devices at home before going out.

Bring clean water to keep pets hydrated, and watch for signs that your pet is overheating.

Make sure your pet has opportunities to go to the bathroom. This can include a litter box for a cat or a portable dog potty.

“While time out on the family boat may be a new and adventurous experience for your pet, a little planning beforehand can make it an activity you can enjoy for years to come,” the statement from Allstate read.
