For the past 35 years, I have been trying to get the sidewalks and curbing replaced on West Washington Street.
I have written to state Rep. Martin Causer and also Gov. Tom Wolf about the situation. Causer passed the buck to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which did nothing. The governor said he would do something and nothing was done.
Now the state has mandated that the sidewalks need to be handicap-accessible, so the contractors are here to replace the sidewalks, but not the curbing. The next heavy rain will wash out under those sidewalks, so all that work will be useless.
It is time we get a state government that will work for the people and not for its own interests. Just look at the condition of the curbs across from Dairy Queen and that will tell you the tale.
Our city wants our properties to be in excellent shape, but will do nothing to beautify the sidewalks and curbs. West Washington is a state highway, so why can’t the state do something about this situation? We have a gas tax to cover road repairs and I would like to know where all that tax money is going? It surely isn’t used for road repairs.
Just look at Route 346 in Corydon Township and Looker Mountain Trail, or Route 59 from the Warren County line to Smethport. Our PennDot engineer, in Clearfield, said that West Washington Street was repaved in 2005. I have lived on that street for 35 years and haven’t seen paving.
We have too many useless people in government and on the street payroll. It is time for a change.
