The two-time defending district champion Bradford High girls golf team began its 2017 season with a solid 34.5-20.5 victory over Cameron County on Thursday.
Playing at Pine Acres Country Club, the Lady Owls were led by Elyse Godding and Kate Huber, who both shot 44 to earn 9.5 points apiece.
“They both had one bad hole but they played very well afterwards,” Bradford High coach Judy Abbey said of the two sophomores. “They both lipped out a few birdie putts but overall I was pleased with the first match. It’s hard to get back into that format. Both girls played well, but there’s definitely room for improvement if you asked them.”
Team captain Abby Zickefoose shot a 53 for 6.5 points, good for fourth overall.
“She’s consistent,” Abbey said of the senior. “That’s the thing you’ll be hearing me say a lot is that she’s very consistent. She had a couple bad holes but she was able to put it back together.”
Freshman Adrienne Angell shot a 57 for five points in her first varsity match, much to the delight of her coach.
“I was extremely pleased with her play,” Abbey said. “She started a little slow because of some nerves. But she got into it and played really well. I can see her getting better and better.”
Emily Keltz earned four points with a 59, while first-year player Andrea Pecora played well enough to earn points as Bradford’s sixth-lowest shooter.
“I’m very proud of the whole team,” Abbey said. “We wanted a nice start and we played well.”
Cameron County was led by Tess Dubler, whose 52 earned eight points.
The Lady Owls will be in Smethport on Thursday to take on Port Allegany.
