A Bradford man is in McKean County Jail after he allegedly assaulted another man with a baseball bat late Sunday night.
James Richard Graves, 26, of 117 Oakwood Ave., was arraigned Monday morning before District Judge William Todd on charges of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, both second-degree misdemeanors, court records stated.
According to court records, at 11:24 p.m. Sunday at 117 Rockland Ave., Bradford, Graves struck Nathan Mott in the head with a baseball bat.
At the scene, Bradford City Police saw Mott with an “obvious injury to the left side of his head,” as well as a piece of broken bat that witnesses said was part of the bat used to strike Mott, court records indicated.
Mott was taken via Bradford City Ambulance to Bradford Regional Medical Center for treatment, while police finished collecting witness statements and traveled to Graves’ house.
During an interview with police, Graves at first denied the allegations and provided the name of an another person police could interview; after the witness was interviewed, police interviewed Graves again. This time, Graves was cooperative and acknowledged that he did strike Mott with the bat, according to court records.
Graves explained to police that the bat broke when he hit the ground with it — not when he hit Mott — and he said he ditched the other part of the broken bat “by throwing it in the river,” court records read.
Graves was jailed in lieu of $20,000 bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on Aug. 24.
