PORT ALLEGANY — The Port Allegany Borough Council is weighing a proposal to sell water in bulk to an energy company, JKLM Energy LLC of Allegheny County.
Borough Manager Robert Veilleux detailed the proposal to borough council on Monday. The proposition is to sell fresh water to JKLM, which drills natural gas wells in the region, for $10 per 1,000 gallons and to sell effluent water at $5 per 1,000 gallons. This money would be split in some way with Herzog Oil to be decided upon at a later date.
The money brought in from water sales would help replace some of the borough’s lost revenue when Pittsburgh Corning was closed, Veilleux said, and it would use some of the excess water capacity that was created when PC shut down operations.
Council voted to continue negotiations with JKLM.
Also mentioned and approved at the meeting was the Rotary Club’s project to build a ramp up to the gazebo and bring it up to Americans With Disabilities Act standards. Meanwhile, a grant to help pay for the repaving of Ransom Street was discussed by the council and approved.
Veilleux also brought up selling a wide range of equipment that is not being used and is taking up space in the borough’s maintenance building. In discussion the resolution made for the sale of equipment was amended and the amended resolution was approved.
The equipment will be put on the Municibid website for sale.
In the engineer’s report, Patrick Ward told the council that the Mill Street and U.S. Route 6 traffic signal had been adjusted to the new timing requested, but that the Route 6 and Route 155 traffic signal had not been adjusted.
“When I went in to adjust it I had never seen any controller like that before,” Ward said. “In looking online the only other controller like it was found in a museum.”
He then suggested to the council to consider purchasing a new controller.
The council will next meet 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
