In conjunction with Saturday’s Willow Creek Triathlon, Gold star families were able to honor their loved ones who lost their lives while doing their military job.
Gold Star families include the family members of someone who was killed during military service.
The triathlon raises money for Disabled American Veterans in McKean and Warren counties. This year, the money is earmarked for the DAV Transportation Network.
The race itself included a 300-yard swim in Quaker Lake, 15 miles on bicycle to The Shack at Corydon and a three-mile run on West Washington Street, Bradford, to the former Willows Restaurant.
Soldiers whose families were honored as Gold Star families included the following: Staff Sergeant Charles Burgess, 23, Army Air Corps; PFC Robert Allen, 21, Army; Lance Corporal Larry Havers, 21, Marine Corps; Hospitalman 3rd Class james Oxley, 21, Navy; Corporal Daniel Cappello, 22, Marine Corps;Sergeant Lawrence G. Grassi, 21, Army; PFC Bruce Cobb, 18, Marine Corps; Specialist 4th Class William “Danny” Nuhfer, 20, Army; Corporal Stephen J. Kessler, 20, Army; Captain Frank M. Pascarella, 32, Army; Master Sergeant Thom Maholic, 38, Special Forces; Staff Sergeant Kenneth R. VanGiesen, 30, Pa. National Guard.
The results of the triathlon itself were not available at press time Sunday.
