COUDERSPORT — The Potter County Veterans’ Gravestone Rehabilitation Project was recently presented to the National Association of Counties and will be presented to the County Commissioners’ Association of Pennsylvania this weekend.
The gravestone project has garnered a lot of support from across the county, and a number of cemeteries and citizens groups are showing interest in starting the process at other locations across Potter County.
The project began locally after a news report featuring a Florida man, Andrew Lumish, who uses an Arlington National Cemetery-approved substance, and a little elbow grease, to transform old gravestones into the bright, shining monuments they were when first erected.
Commissioner Paul Heimel has been appointed to serve on a number of National Association of Counties committees. He will serve as a member of both the Rural Action Caucus and the Veterans and Military Services Committee, and has been appointed to the Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee as the Vice Chair of the Courts & Corrections Subcommittee. His experience in working with local criminal justice reforms and veterans’ affairs issues at the local level led to his appointment.
Commissioner Susan Kefover announced programming expansions announced recently by the Pennsylvania Adult & Teen Challenge group, formerly known as Teen Challenge. Previously, the organization, whose slogan is “bringing wholeness to the hopeless,” operated long-term, faith-based rehabilitation programs at several locations in Pennsylvania. The organization has now added short-term (30 days) rehabilitation programs and detox facilities in an effort to help more individuals struggling with addiction. The shorter-term programs are not faith-based, and were added as part of an effort to save more lives and make recovery more affordable and accessible.

A service contract renewal was approved with Casella Waste Systems for trash/recycling removal for Potter County commissioners at a rate of $367.20 per month, and for the Potter County Human Services building at a cost of $345 per month. Both were approved for a three-year term.
Bart Ianson was appointed to the Potter County Farmland Preservation Board of Directors as a Contractor Board Member.
The next meeting of the Potter County Commissioners will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 3 at the Gunzburger Building in Coudersport.
