EMPORIUM — Talk at the Cameron County commissioner’s meeting Thursday focused on this year’s Cameron County Fair, which will feature a number of activities and presentations aimed at connecting children and adults with the natural world.
The Cameron County Conservation District will host a booth at the fair and provide other activities related to nature and outdoor recreation.
“We’re working to try and provide better support to the Cameron County Fair. It’s a nice, very family-friendly event, and I think they do a really nice job,” said assistant district manager Kate Morgan.
In addition to the informational booth, games, and activities to be hosted by the conservation district every night during the fair, district employees will also present a Backyard Conservation Workshop on Tuesday night. They are also partnering with a number of other agencies, including Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities and the Cameron County Family Center, to host the newly re-named Jan Hampton Youth Conservation Night. Youth Conservation Night has been renamed in honor of Hampton, who passed away last year after previously serving as the district head for a number of years and being very active in youth outdoor educational efforts in the county.
“We will have a bowhunters’ program, Mark Baker of Eagle Dream Rehabilitation will offer a live birds-of-prey presentation, and there will be tons of other partners coming in. There are endless opportunities and it should be a great night,” Morgan said. “It should be a really fun week.”
Loretta Montgomery, county domestic relations director, spoke on efforts in Cameron County and across the state. This month will be proclaimed Child Support Awareness Month at the state level, and commissioners passed a resolution during Thursday’s meeting to declare it in the county.
Montgomery stated that child support agents interact with a number of other agencies while dealing with children and families, from children and youth all the way through to the IRS to ensure that individuals in arrears on child support payments do not receive a lump sum of money without first paying on their previous obligations.
The county’s processes have been featured in two different publications aimed at sharing best practices with other child support enforcement agencies across the state. Montgomery said that those solutions will not always work in other locations, Cameron County being unique in its small size and population.
Currently, the county’s department is receiving quarterly incentives for a job well done, exceeding performance measures in four of five categories.
National Fuel sent notification of a project to modernize a segment of systems in Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, McKean and Potter counties. In Shippen Township, Cameron County, and Benezette Township, Elk County, 12 miles of 12-inch steel high-pressure pipeline will be removed from service (Line FM-120).
The next meeting of the Cameron County Commissioners will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the courthouse in Emporium.
