A Coudersport man is in Potter County Jail for allegedly assaulting his wife and threatening to shoot her in the head.
On Wednesday, Joseph Charles Santangelo, 61, of 102 Eckert Lane, was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, a first-degree felony; terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor; recklessly endangering another person, a second-degree misdemeanor; and harassment, a summary offense.
According to court records, at 8:09 p.m. Tuesday, Santangelo threatened his wife with a loaded 22 magnum handgun that was in the chair where he was sitting. Both had been drinking prior to the incident, and began arguing when he threatened to shoot her while pointing the gun at her head, court records read.
Santangelo then stood, grabbed her around the throat and choked her as he pushed her away, court records read. When she grabbed the phone to call 9-1-1, Santangelo left the residence to “seek refuge in the woods surrounding the residence,” court records read.
Sweden Township Police Chief Bryan Phelps was joined by state police in searching the area before Santangelo returned and was taken into custody without incident.
He was arraigned before District Judge Annette Easton and remanded to jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. July 31 before Easton.
