GOOD SAMARITANS: A Bradford man wanted readers to know about the good neighbors we have in the city.
On Saturday, Stephen Thompson of South Avenue was on his way to the Zippo/Case Museum to participate in the 20th anniversary celebration, when his wheelchair started acting up.
Then, “It went dead. It didn’t work at all,” he said of his chair.
Stuck on the road and unsure about what to do, he called the McKean County 911 Center. He noted that, while he had a personal care assistant with him, she was small and would not have been able to get him home.
While he was waiting for help, “A Good Samaritan pushed me off the road,” Stephen said, adding that another person stopped to offer assistance, too, until police arrived.
The two officers who came — “They were very friendly and nice,” he said. As were the people at the 911 center.
“The two policemen — they waited, made sure I was on my way home before they left,” Stephen added.
“We’ve got some very nice, good people in Bradford.”
We agree.
GET OUTDOORS: The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently shared information about a national program meant to encourage interest in conservation.
National Hunting and Fishing Day is Sept. 23, and this there will be extra motivation for people to share their outdoor recreation skills: Everyone who signs up to participate in the NHF Day Challenge will be in the running for prizes.
Participation simply means “taking someone hunting, fishing or target shooting.” Organizers are just looking for mentors.
“Today fewer people are connecting with nature through hunting and fishing,” said Richard Childress, former NASCAR racer and honorary chair for National Hunting and Fishing Day. “As outdoorsmen and women, we are one of the keys to reversing this trend. Help a friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker learn how to hunt, fish or shoot. Introducing someone to the joys of the outdoors not only enriches their life, it creates a future conservationist.”
