LEWIS RUN –– Teams from as far away as Utah, Virginia and Ohio competed in the 27th annual FOOTErest volleyball tournament over the weekend at Bettum’s Idlewood Family Campgrounds in Lewis Run.
Twenty-two teams from five states competed in the tournament, sponsored by Bradford Legion Post 108, to benefit funding for Evergreen Elm activities.
“Sweeny Rhymes with Weeny” from Cambridge Springs won the open division (AA) on Saturday with a 13-5 record.
“Crofut” from Alexandria, Va., took the semi-power division (A) over six other teams, finishing with a 10-2 record. Beaver Falls’ “Net Ninjas” took the other semi-power division (B) with a 10-2 record.
The double-elimination 2-on-2 games started Saturday afternoon with seven teams battling it out before Marc Girls and Nate Nowicki of Falconer, N.Y., took on Jon Moore (Bath, N.Y.) and Josh Strait (Cohocton, N.Y.), with the former winning in three games.
Ten open teams, seven power teams and five semi-power squads played in Sunday’s 6-on-6 competition, with “Team Ramrod” of Eldred taking out “Net Ninjas” in the semi-power division. “Gummy Bears/Biscuits” from Shinglehouse won the winners’ bracket over “Crofut.”
“Sweeny Rhymes with Weeny” won the open division after going undefeated.
Other teams participating traveled from across the New York border from Tonawanda, Belmont, Rochester, Hornell, Olean and Wellsville, while squads from Pittsburgh, Erie and Scranton also played. Bradford, Eldred, Ridgway, Shinglehouse and Wellsboro represented the area.
