The former Bradford City policeman charged with stealing around $10 worth of meat from Walmart will face a hearing later this month in Smethport.
Shayne Miller, 45, of Bradford, was cited for allegedly taking packages of meat — both worth between $4.50 and $5 — from Walmart at 2:55 p.m. April 21 and again at 2:57 p.m. April 26, without paying for them, according to citations filed first in District Judge Rich Luther’s office.
Miller, a former employee of Walmart, was a city policeman at the time of the alleged thefts. He was terminated from the police department on May 26.
A summary hearing on the theft charges has been scheduled for 11 a.m. July 24 before District Judge Bill Todd, transferred there because of Luther’s working relationship with Miller.
The case is being prosecuted by the attorney general’s office. The arresting officer in the case is Cpl. Mary Gausman, a Kane-based state trooper.
While the police department does not comment on personnel matters, Chief Chris Lucco said he and Mayor Tom Riel wanted transparency throughout the process.
A statement from Lucco shortly after the charges were filed read, “My office received information regarding possible criminal misconduct by a city police officer. This information spurred both an internal and criminal investigation.”
When the investigation was concluded, Miller was terminated.
Lucco’s statement concluded, “It is paramount that the city of Bradford police department maintains the highest level of integrity, and public trust. We learned of the situation; it was immediately acted upon and dealt with in a swift manner.”
