SMETHPORT (EC) — Smethport Borough Council approved a request Monday for a 5-kilometer road race to be held on Aug. 5 in the community.
A spokesman for the race organizers, Bill Stephen, said no borough streets will be closed and the organizing group will provide spotters along the route. Approximately 70 runners are expected to participate in the race, which will raise funds for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Speaking on behalf of the McKean County Historical Society and its Old Jail Museum, Bart Barton thanked the borough for its support of the society’s “Arts on the Island” that drew 31 vendors and other entries for the car show several weeks ago in Hamlin Lake Park.
It is possible that this event will be held next year, but on a different weekend.
In another matter, council also granted a request from Brittany Thompson for the use of a pavilion in Hamlin Lake Park for a free event, a Summer Water Blast from 2-7 p. m. on August 23.
Council approved the amount of County Aid funding, which this year amounts to $3,721. Borough officials plan to use this money for next year’s paving projects.
Also approved was a motion to purchase a new color copier and telephone system for the borough office.
After meeting in an executive session for 50 minutes, council adjourned the meeting with no additional business transacted.
