Bradford City Police reported that at 1:35 a.m. June 30, they responded to a report of a barricaded gunman with a hostage — a domestic dispute — at 16 Brennan St.
The situation resulted with Joseph James Montecalvo, 29, a resident of the home, being arrested on charges including strangulation and terroristic threats.
According to police, “On arrival officers secured the area and attempted to make contact with the suspect and/or victim, neither of which would respond to the door of the residence.”
By 1:46 a.m., “the situation was resolved peacefully” with the victim being allowed to leave the residence; Montecalvo emerged from the home at 1:56 a.m., police said.
According to court records, Montecalvo and his girlfriend had been fighting. He found that he had been locked out of his bedroom, so he allegedly kicked the door in.
When she was on the phone calling for help, he allegedly strangled her, almost making her pass out. She lost her phone, and Montecalvo put her in the corner, court records indicated. She allegedly struck him in the eye and threw a chair at him, trying to keep him away.
At one point, Montecalvo grabbed a gun and told her if the police come, he would shoot them, too, according to court records.
During a subsequent sweep of the house, police found drug paraphernalia in his bedroom, court records stated.
Police from Bradford Township, Foster Township and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, as well as the McKean County 911 Center, assisted with the incident.
Montecalvo was arraigned Friday before District Judge Dominic Cercone on charges of strangulation, a second-degree felony; terroristic threats and unlawful restraint, both first-degree misdemeanors; two counts of simple assault, both second-degree misdemeanors; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor, police said.
Montecalvo was released, having posted a percentage of $30,000 bail, and he is scheduled to appear in Central Court on July 6.
