MEMORIES: Frances Wolfe Haight of Kane shared a couple of memories from her childhood.
We laughed out loud when we got to the middle of this first story:
“A Mousy Story”
“When I was ten years old, I saw a cartoon at the Mount Jewett theater that featured a flea carrying a dog on a platter and singing a song like, ‘NO MORE MEATLESS TUESDAYS FOR ME!’ I thought it was really funny.
“The next day, my Aunt Marie was sitting in the living room reading a book. Grandma was in the kitchen as usual and Grandpa was emptying the mouse traps in the pantry.
“I took one of the dead mice by the tail, waltzed into the living room and sang, ‘NO MORE MEATLESS TUESDAYS FOR ME!!!!’
“Aunt Marie screamed, threw her book down and ran upstairs and locked herself in the bathroom! Well, the lock jammed and she could not get out.
“My grandfather had to go out the window in his bedroom, walk around to the front on the porch roof, go through the bathroom window which was partly open and get the lock unjammed. Needless to say, I was in trouble for scaring Aunt Marie.
“Many years later, after she had a serious illness, we were all sitting at the kitchen table having supper. Aunt Marie looked down by the refrigerator and said quietly, “Oh, there is a mouse.” She didn’t scream or fuss at all; just kept on eating her supper.”
Frances also wondered if anyone remembered the autograph books people used to carry. Do any of these poems ring a bell?
“Roses are red, ferns are green,
Your mouth runs like a sewing machine.”
“When midnight shuts the curtain,
And pins it with a star,
Remember we are friends
No matter where you are.”
“Read and that and
Up you I you
And will love love
Down see you me.”
“Roses are red,
Skies are blue,
I’m not the only one
That fell in love with you.”
