JOHNSONBURG — Domtar Corp. donated $10,000 to the Johnsonburg Community Center, and partnered with the Student Conservation Association Saturday to work on renovating and restoring the center.
The donation will be used to fund a new weight room facility. In addition to Domtar’s donation, employees from the company’s Johnsonburg Mill, along with members from its non-profit partner, the Student Conservation Association, teamed up Saturday to host a volunteer on-site refurbishing of the entire community center.
Domtar makes a wide variety of everyday products from sustainable wood fiber, such as copy paper and diapers. Domtar’s Johnsonburg Mill employs 360 people in the local community.
“Domtar is proud to call Johnsonburg our home, which is why we’re honored to donate our time and funding to revitalize the historic Johnsonburg Community Center,” said Domtar Corporate Responsibility Manager, Heather Alverson Stowe. “Because we’re committed to investing in the communities in which we operate, we’ve worked with our non-profit partner, the Student Conservation Association, to organize this volunteer restoration of the Johnsonburg Community Center so that local families and community members can benefit from the revitalization of this historic, recreational space.”
The new weight room, currently available for use, has helped increase membership at the Johnsonburg Community Center by more than 30 percent since it was installed this year.
“This investment in the Johnsonburg community reflects one of Domtar’s three pillars of giving: health and wellness,” said Stowe. “Our hope is that this restoration effort will support healthy living for generations to come here in Johnsonburg.”
Volunteers at the event received event t-shirts and reusable water bottles, as well as work gloves, tools, safety glasses, and project materials for the restoration effort. Breakfast and lunch were provided for all volunteers.
“Domtar’s generous support helps the Student Conservation Association empower teens and restore municipal parks in cities across the nation,” said Student Conservation Association President and CEO Jaime Matyas. “We are excited to bring our youth leaders out to serve side-by-side with Domtar volunteers in improving communities where Domtar employees live and work. The hands-on efforts of Domtar volunteers will help to maintain this local community center as a vital recreational resource for Johnsonburg.”
The building was cleaned up with pain and mulch and storage units were built.
