COUDERSPORT — As part of its annual Cherry Springs Star Party, the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg is inviting the public to attend a special viewing of the stars for free between 8 and 11 p.m. on June 24, at Cherry Springs State Park.
The park is at 4639 Cherry Springs Road, Coudersport, 11.8 miles or about 20 minutes from Galeton via West Branch Road and 15.1 miles or about 21 minutes from Coudersport using Route 44.
This is a great opportunity for people to look at the stars through the many different types of telescopes set up on the park’s Astronomy Observation Field and talk with the visiting astronomers.
Plan to arrive before dark, park in the visitors parking lot and walk to Astronomy Field. Bring a small flashlight.
If Astronomy Observation Field is extremely wet due to rain, it is recommended that visitors wear waterproof footwear. The park can be quite cool and damp at night so warm clothing is recommended along with proper footwear. Flip flops are not recommended. Absolutely no dogs will be permitted on the field.
Visitors should check the Clear Sky Chart for Cherry Springs website (http://www.cleardarksky.com/c/ChrSprPkPAkey.html) for current cloud cover and viewing conditions.
If it rains or the sky is overcast, this event will be cancelled. Those planning to attend are asked to check for program updates after 3 p.m. on June 22 by calling 1-814-435-1037 and selecting option #5.
