Replacement work will start in earnest next week on a bridge near the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The bridge will be closed on Wednesday, and a detour around the project will be in place. The official detour will direct drivers to use West Corydon Street, South Avenue, Mechanic Street, and West Washington Street. The detour will be in effect through the length of the project. The Pitt-Bradford campus remains accessible from West Washington Street down to Campus Drive.
The state-owned bridge spans the west branch of Tunungwant Creek on Dorothy Lane at Pitt-Bradford. The existing bridge is weight-limit posted for 27-tons for single vehicle and 32-tons for combination vehicles. It carries an average of almost 1,200 vehicles each day. Replacing the bridge will eliminate the weight posting and allow PennDOT to remove it from McKean County’s structurally deficient list.
Overall project work will include replacement of the old bridge, approach paving, guide-rail upgrades, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items.
All work is weather and schedule dependent. The L.C. Whitford Company, Inc. of Wellsville, N.Y. is the contractor on this $3 million project. PennDOT expects the bridge to be complete and open to traffic in early November.
