SMETHPORT — A Port Allegany man pleaded guilty to allegations that he led police officers on a chase in March.
Richard J. Babcock, 44, entered the plea to charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, habitual offenders and four summary charges.
According to District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer, on March 5, Babcock failed to stop when police signaled for him to pull over to avoid getting charged with DUI, and ended up leading officers on a high speed chase; during the course of the chase, he failed to keep in his lane, failed to stop at a stop sign and reached a speed of 100 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Babcock will be sentenced June 8.
Also in court, Charles T. Travis Jr., 56, of Bradford, pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing emergency services. Assistant District Attorney Sean Barrett said that on Jan. 14, Travis yelled at first responders who came to help someone who was in cardiac arrest, and he got in their personal space; he had to be taken to a police car before the person in cardiac arrest could be treated. He will be sentenced June 15.
