EMPORIUM — The 63rd Annual Drum & Henry Fishing Derby will be held Sunday at the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club on Sizer Run Road.
The Drum & Henry Fishing Derby got its start in 1954, organized by businessmen Norm Drum and Ed Henry. The event was originally held at their camp on Whittimore Hill.
Kids are permitted to catch three fish each using live bait; no catch and release or artificial lures will be permitted. Youth ages 14 and younger are invited to attend. The pond is stocked prior to the event.
Refreshments will be available to registered youth, with registration available on-site the day of the event.
Participants will also be entered into a prize drawing.
Last year, about 150 children registered. Due to rainy conditions, attendance was down slightly, but most participants reported good fishing conditions and a successful afternoon.
Funds for the event are provided through donations from individuals and businesses and the Emporium Foundation. The event is successful each year thanks to the adult and student volunteers who spend their time getting ready for and providing services during the event.
The pond will remain open to age 14 and younger through the weekend of June 11, when a second event will be hosted at the club.
On June 10 and 11, the clubhouse will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving refreshments for registered fishing youths.
