The eleventh annual Ride of Pride — Vietnam Veterans Honor Ride will be held Saturday.
Staging is slated from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on East Water Street in Smethport across the street from the McKean County Post #2497, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
“All road legal vehicles are welcome,” said Gerry Ford, financial officer of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron #138, event sponsor.
The scenic ride will stop first at the Warren Eagles Club before proceeding to the Blue Jay Creek Bar and arriving at the Mount Jewett Veterans Club at approximately 3 p.m. Ford said, “The public is welcome to meet us in Mount Jewett before leaving for Hamlin Lake Park in Smethport at 3:30 p.m.”
The ride is in memory of the Ride of Pride that accompanied the Vietnam Moving Wall to Hamlin Lake Park in 2006, where it was displayed from June 1 to 5.
A brief ceremony will be held at the McKean County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the park. Ford will act as master of ceremonies. American Legion Post #138’s chaplain, Seth Digel, will offer the invocation and benediction, as well as introduce the speaker, Pat Miesowitz, commander of the Bucktail Post #138, Smethport American Legion.
An Air Force veteran, Miesowitz served two tours in Vietnam, where his final assignment was a weapons specialist who trained South Vietnamese Army and ground crews on the loading and arming of weapons.
Bud Carlson, a Vietnam veteran and project coordinator of the McKean County Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will announce the names listed on the memorial marker. Also participating will be Gary Rounsville, a Vietnam veteran, as the bell ringer.
Families of veterans listed on the memorial will place flowers, and veterans will lay white flowers at the marker before the audience will be asked to pay their respects and the remaining flowers will be distributed.
Ford will call for the Honor the Dead tribute.
Army veteran Bud Abbey will be commander of the honor guard.
