CLEARFIELD — A 2-day detour will be in place next week as work continues a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) bridge project in Hamlin Township.
The bridge spans Kinzua Creek on Township Road 602 in the village of Kushequa and a detour will be in place on the project Tuesday and Wednesday, May 23 and 24. From T-602, the detour will direct drivers to use Route 6, Route 219, and Route 59. Drivers familiar with the area may choose to use alternate routes.
The 63-foot bridge dates from 1949 and is currently weight limit posted for 32 tons for single vehicles and 37 tons for combination vehicles. It carries an average of 60 vehicles each day. Replacing the bridge will remove it from the structurally deficient bridge list.
Outside of the 2-day closure, most work on the project is being done in a half-width configuration, with a temporary traffic signal controlling an alternating traffic pattern. PennDOT expects one or two more short-term detours on the project later this summer and will issue notices about those closures prior to implementation.
Overall project work includes removal of the current bridge, construction of the new single-span composite beam bridge, paving, guide rail installation, pavement markings, and miscellaneous items.
The new bridge should be open to traffic by the end of October. In 2018, the contractor will return to the job site to apply an epoxy treatment to the bridge deck.
All work is weather and schedule dependent. Bob Cummins Construction Co. of Bradford is the contractor on this $1.4 million project.
