MILITARY SPOUSES: Today is Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
The day is part of National Military Appreciation Day, which is celebrated for the whole month of May.
In Pennsylvania, legislators have gotten on board, designating the day here in the state.
“Military Spouse Appreciation is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day each year,” state a press release from the office of state Sen. Randy Vulakovich. “This special observation was created by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 as a way for a grateful nation to recognize the contributions made by military spouses and their role in supporting our men and women in uniform.”
Vulakovich is chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee.
“When our military deploys overseas into hostile environments, those men and women know they carry the thoughts and prayers of their families and friends,” Vulakovich stated.
“That care and concern provides our soldiers with strength as they face the dangers involved with military duty,” he continued. “With this Resolution, we say thank you to all military spouses, past and present, for keeping the home fires burning bright, warm and comforting for our men and women in uniform.”
So, if you know a military husband or wife who could use a little support, today would be a great day to send over a meal, offer to babysit for awhile or invite your neighbor over for a hot beverage.
LIMERICK: If you’re looking for a fun way to spend the afternoon after a long work week, our calendar tells us today is Limerick Day.
The five-line poems are meant to be silly, so no pressure to have anything deep to say.
If any locals write a limerick that is clean enough for print, we’d love to hear it.
