SMETHPORT — A preliminary hearing has been set for a woman accused of taking money from a church.
Frances Lucille Herzog, 63, of Smethport, is charged with theft by unlawful taking and disorderly conduct, both third-degree misdemeanors; and harassment, a summary charge, court records stated.
According to court records, on the morning of April 2 — a Sunday morning — Herzog entered the United Methodist Church at 601 King St., Smethport, through the back door, riding her motorized wheelchair up the handicap ramp at that entrance. She rode through the aisle of the church to the Children’s Mission Fund Jar, which was sitting by the main entrance.
Herzog allegedly grabbed a handful of money from the jar, and, when Brenda Lea Young approached her about it, Herzog tried to hide the money, court records stated.
Court records related that Young grabbed Herzog’s arm once, telling her to put the money back, and Herzog started to ride back down the aisle between the pews. Young stepped in front of Herzog to stop her, but Herzog continued forward, allegedly running over Young’s feet with the wheelchair.
Witnesses intervened, and Herzog threw warm coffee on Young and fled out the church’s rear entrance, court records stated.
Herzog was scheduled to appear in Central Court this past Thursday, when a full hearing was scheduled for June 5.
Herzog is free on $2,000 unsecured bail.
