Bail has been lowered for a Meadville man who faces child endangerment charges in the death of his 5-year-old son.
Daniel J. Murphy, 27, appeared for a bail hearing Thursday in Elk County Court.
On Feb. 3, 2016, his son was found dead in the Ridgway apartment of Murphy’s brother and sister-in-law. Murphy is one of four people charged in the child’s death.
According to court records, Murphy, who has been held incarcerated since May 5, 2016, on $200,000 bail, had his bail lowered to $25,000.
He is remains in Elk County Jail, an online court docket indicated on Thursday afternoon.
The alleged victim’s mother, Ashlee Druhot, 24, of Meadville, has also filed a motion for bail modification, but no hearing date is listed on the online docket. The docket states that she remains incarcerated in lieu of $250,000 bail, but it does not list where.
Murphy and Druhot are each accused of leaving the 5-year-old in the care of his aunt and uncle — Scott J. Murphy, 26, and Kristy M. Murphy, 36 — despite knowing the other couple’s violent history, according to court records.
Scott and Kristy Murphy are each charged with homicide in the case, and Elk County District Attorney Shawn McMahon is pursuing the death penalty against the pair, court records stated.
Investigators say the boy died of blunt force trauma to the head and allege the injuries were caused by either Kristy or Scott Murphy.
President Judge Richard Masson granted the appointment of special public defenders for the pair in July 2016. They are being held in Centre County Jail without bail.
No future court appearances for any of the four defendants are listed on the online court docket.
